Jetson Green: Maryfield Home

Pardon the amateur photography in this article, but hopefully you can see how beautiful this newly built home is — it could become the first LEED certified home in Utah!  The Maryfield Home was designed by John Sparano and Anne Mooney of Sparano + Mooney Architecture, also the owners, and they’re eagerly working towards certification.  I first found out about it from Benchmark Modern, a local contractor specializing in modern green construction, and they were able to arrange a tour.

Maryfield has several and various green features, including concrete radiant floors, Energy Star dimmable CFLs, SolaTubes, recycled steel framing, low-VOC paint, R30 walls, R50 roofing, a high efficiency boiler and HVAC, and a tight footprint.  The home has 2,600 square feet of living and unparalleled views, as you can see, of the mountainous outdoors.

Jetson Green: Menir House

This is Hidden Creek Eco-Village.  It’s a little bit different kind of suburban development that attempts to reconcile the demands of single-family home buyers with the problems of sprawling housing developments.  First, Hidden Creek is full of communal features, such as neighborhood trails, car parks, front porches, central mailboxes, and shared streetscapes.  Plus the homes are densely sited to maintain open, natural spaces.  Second, Hidden Creek is surrounded by the natural environment: there’s a nature preserve on the north, a creek on the south, and natural grasses and trees everywhere else.  To maintain the integrity of the site, homes were placed around existing trees and landscaping.  Third, all the homes have been custom-designed for each site to allow views of the surrounding landscape and nature.

Crabapple House – standout features include the bamboo floors, a roof garden, grey water recycling, concrete floors with radiant heating, modern finishes, low-E windows, recycled stone countertops, and incredible views from the inside.

NotM H Arquitectes: House 205

Located in Vacarisses, Catalunya [España], House 205 was completed for Francesc Ortega i Maria Ferriol in 2008. Similar to the previously featured House 108, H Arquitectes‘ first priority was accessing the impact the project would have on the site – and designing the home accordingly. This attention to the surrounding hillside evolved into a linear home, perched on a rock outcropping and seemingly clinging to the slope of the hill.

Clad in Flanders Pine paneling, the home seems to blend into the background of the hillside. The land shelf that the house rests upon creates open spaces for the home’s entry/exit and a garden – drawing the occupants and visitors linearly along the hillside. Using the existing site conditions in this way, the design leaves the path leading to the road/parking area as the only part of the site that cuts though the existing sloped terrain.

The large layer of rock and two concrete struts will be used as the foundations of the house. The two
struts will lay the foundations of the house on the rock. These two struts will also create a space
permanently ventilated between the house and the rocky ground.

The home was constructed with large laminated wood panels – which were used as walls and ceilings. This allowed H Arquitectes the freedom to design large, open, free-flowing spaces on the lower level – the kitchen, living area, and study – connected in a linear progression through the house. The second level contains the more private space, namely the bedrooms – which have large sliding doors that open on to a long shared open space, with windows opening out to views down the hill.

This structural system implies a very important diminishment of the weight, raw material, energy and  so the CO2 emissions associated with the foundations and structure of the building. The dry  assembly is easy, quick and helps saving great amounts of water. Altogether eases the building and reduces significantly the cost and time investments. The laminated wood is a renewable material that can be dismantled and therefore recycled. This means its life cycle is practically closed.

The facades are ventilated and finished with coniferous wood such as Flanders pine. The openings
have also been finished with wooden fitters protected with removable shutters. The transpirability of
the facade is guaranteed with a TYBEK panel, which protects the wood. The transpirability of the roof
is solved by a draining sheet, which creates a small ventilated room.

Jetson Green: Kohler LivingHome

The good news for prefab keeps coming.  We just received word that the very first KieranTimberlake LivingHome, you know, the one being assembled over the next four days for IBS 2009, will make a second stop in Long Beach, California for TED 2009.  That’s right, a prefab is going to be front and center at TED for the world’s most influential thinkers.  So after a brief stint at IBS, KT1.5 will be transported to Long Beach, where it will become the Kohler LivingHome from February 3-7, 2009.  The home will feature the latest thinking in green design, and I’m sure it will add fire to this smoldering revolution in home design and construction.  LivingHomes CEO Steve Glenn will introduce the Idea House, and after TED, it will stay on display from February 8-20.  After that, apparently, the home will be sold to the first buyer that’s ready to put it on some land.

NotM H Arquitectes: House 108

Located in Santa Cristina d’Aro, Girona [Spain], House 108 – or House Hind – was completed for Steven Hind & Beatriz Escolano by H Arquitectes in 2005. Recipient of 1rst Prize AJAC’07 [Catalonian Young Architects Association], the project stands out from the surrounding architecture, while working with the local environment and terrain [which is one of the main reasons it 'stands out']. Located on a strongly slopped site with dense Mediterranean vegetation, the project is surrounded by homes of “low architectural interest” and “large impact on the landscape”.

H Arquitectes first priority was addressing this issue of environmental and landscape impact – so they worked to limit changes to the site and surrounding vegetation.

We tried to modify as little as possible the environment by building the house on a slope, and thus reducing the land movements, foundation and generation of waste products. We also have maintained the vegetation in order to not lose the current shaded and cool ambiance as well as a sensible design of the exterior elements – wooden stairs following the natural slope and a minimal perimeter fence.

The solution was to work with the slope of the site, stepping the house with the terrain and therefore eliminating the need for extensive regrading of the site [see section below].

This sectional stepping also serves to add an additional level of separation to the otherwise very open interior – with short runs of stairs connecting the stepping concrete floors [which, additionally, serve as a thermal mass]. Adapting the section to work with the site means that each of these spaces connects to the landscape outside through the use of large openings that are cut [basically] down to grade.

In addition to connecting to the natural surroundings, these openings also provide natural light and cross ventilation to all the interior spaces, as well as allowing for natural ventilation through the higher [in site elevation] southern facade – which is also naturally shaded in the summer by deciduous climbing plants. As we all know, warm air rises – and in the case of this project, that means moving to the southern [highest] end of the house – drawing fresh, cool air through the interiors.

The home’s facade itself [detail below] is a ventilated ‘double pane’ system, with interior bearing walls. This improves insulation, and provides a cavity within which those large windows can slide. These openings have 3 layers of closure: adjustable shutters, insect screens, and insulated glass – creating an interior space that can adapt to daily/seasonal weather changes.

Jetson Green: Orchid Cityhomes

About a year ago, we showed some renderings of Orchid Street Cityhomes, and it turns out, the homes are now finished.  Matter of fact, they’ve won a Root Award in Portland Spaces‘ inaugural design competition.  Well deserved, I believe.  Orchid Cityhomes is a duplex, or connected rowhouses, but the party wall is the garage, so the homes maintain a level of privacy and separation that’s usually missing in most attached residences.  They were designed and developed by Building Arts Workshop and both dwellings just received LEED Platinum certification about a week before Christmas.  Some of the green amenities include:

  • Remote controlled skylights that can open for fresh air
  • Reclaimed Douglas fir cabinets, shelving, and fir slat stairs
  • Rain-screen wall that filters water for irrigation, toilets, and laundry
  • In-floor radiant heating
  • Heat recovery ventilators that also bring in fresh air
  • Kitchen countertops made from Seattle curbside recycled glass

SymHomes Mk1

Designed by Piercy Conner Architects, SymHomes Mk1 is a project I’ve been meaning to post for a minute now. Winner of the ‘Living Steel’ design competition [and apparently several other awards for its sustainable/green nature], the proposed project is located in the West Bangor city of Kolkata, India – where temperatures can reach 111°F.

The building would be steel frame with steel cladding and shuttering. Perforated steel screens would serve both as shading devices to protect against the harsh sun, as well as a natural ventilation system – allowing the building to cool itself simply through the circulation of air [when the heat is too extreme, a 'secondary skin' can be sealed within the steel shading and the AC can be cranked].

The project initially caught my eye simply because I like the aesthetic – simple forms wrapped in a perforated skin. Trendy, but cool. I’m also a fan of the imagery/renderings [although some context would be nice, right?]. The sustainable aspect then impressed me a lot, but also got me thinking about what makes a project ‘sustainable’ or ‘green’ – is natural ventilation and shading enough? What about some local material? Maybe something without so much embodied energy? That said, it was designed for a steel competition [I assume that's what 'Living Steel' was], so maybe I should let it go.

And yes, I have to admit, the idea of these steel boxes naturally cooling themselves in such heat seems a little far fetched to me – but Piercy Conner had what look to be some temperature and air circulation diagrams on their site, so we’ll assume they’ve figured it all out [unfortunately the images are small/not so great quality, so who knows].

Jetson Green: Sustainable Cabins

Copeland Casati, founder of Green Modern Kits and Green Cottage Kits, just sent over a link to her newly launched website for Green Cabin Kits.  They have two designs that are customizable: CornerHouse (top 3 renderings) and The Dogtrot Mod (bottom 3 renderings).  They’re quite slick, aren’t they?  CornerHouse is an expandable design that’s versatile enough for urban infill or some rural location in the middle of nowhere.  You choose.  The Dogtrot Mod is also expandable but a little different.  It features an open court in the middle to ventilate and separate the living spaces.  Both kits were designed to accomodate rainwater collection and solar power generation.
