Wow, check out this stunning, prefab home located in Honesdale, Pennsylvania.Â Just like the Marfa Weehouse, a home we talked about a long time ago, this home was designed by Alchemy Architects.Â The Johnson Creek weeHouse is a 2,200 sf retreat home consisting of the main living area for daily activities and a small tower for less intenstive activities, like sleeping.Â The two parts are connected by a patio bridge and the entire home is surrounded by the heavily wooded site.
Gander at the images and note the simplicity of construction.Â We’re talking about, I believe, a total of four modules with some extras.Â And generally speaking, the materials used are similar to those used in other weeHouses.Â The result: high design at a more approachable price.
The various problems with prefab have been discussed often, but as companies start to ramp up production, the benefits and green aspects of prefab, I believe, become more dominant.Â And according to a recent article in Portland Monthly, approximately 20 weeHouses have been sold since 2002.Â That number may seem small, but it’s not.Â With each house, the process becomes more refined and homes get better and better …
Dan Hisel, previously featured here on AMNP, has completed a renovation/addition on a home in Newburyport, MA – which was featured in this past week’s Boston Globe Magazine. Check it out.
The house the Ultmans found, originally a cottage for workers at the James Steam Mill across the street, is at least 100 years old by their estimation. Architect Dan Hisel, whom the couple hired to head up the renovation, immediately appreciated what he calls the structure’s “iconic house shape.” “It’s almost like a Monopoly house in the sense that it has such a simple elevation and clean lines,” he says.
The inside was another story. The home had been a rental property for a number of years and had fallen into disrepair. “I think there were probably four different materials on the floors of the first floor,” Hisel remembers. “It was a seriously challenged house.”
His design preserved the exterior simplicity of the house, so that it exists in harmony with its neighbors, while completely transforming the interior to accommodate the Ultmans’ dream to live in open, connected spaces that would bring the outdoors in.

That’s right – this is a Daniel Libeskind project. Sure, the dbox rendering helps to sell it – but either way this looks to have some potential [and as many of you know, AMNP is not much of a Libeskind fan]. I mean, where are the jagged edges and weird diagonally cut windows? Could be a trick…I’ll wait to see more renderings before making a final decision.
Six years after Daniel Libeskind alighted in the middle of the World Trade Center circus, bearing images of glass towers dripping with sky gardens, the architect has unveiled a proposal for his first New York building: a glass tower dripping with sky gardens. Libeskindâ€™s One Madison Avenue would swoop up next to, and past, the 700-foot Met Life tower. One diagram in Libeskindâ€™s new book, Counterpoint, suggests that the 54-story condo, hovering on columns over an existing building, could top out just shy of 937 feet (Rem Koolhaasâ€™s proposed 23 East 22nd Street is a block away.) Initial designs show a glass-curtained tube with cutaways spiraling up and around the faÃ§ade to reveal segments of terraced verdure, like cultivated patches on the side of a steep alpine slope. â€œWe didnâ€™t just fill up the tower,â€ the architect says. â€œWeâ€™ve taken space away [from the apartments] to create the gardens,â€ which are actually balconies tucked within the envelope. â€œItâ€™s as if nature has come back into the city,â€ he says. The whole project has an air of fantasy about it, but the developer is betting that the current fiscal misery will end before the approvals process does. â€œThe assumption is that by the time construction starts, weâ€™re going to be looking at a different economy,â€ Lloyd Kaplan, an Elad spokesman, says.
Why not build a prefab almost entirely out of reclaimed materials?Â That’s what Reclaimed Space founder Tracen Gardner wants to do.Â Mr. Gardner was in between contracting jobs and began constructing a portable building using primarily reclaimed materials.Â In the process, he liked what he was doing so much that he decided to create Reclaimed Space to continue building modular, passively-designed cabins.Â To start off with, the company will build spaces from 240 square feet and at prices in the range of $115 to $160 psf (min. $25k).
Reclaimed Space designs feature a single pitch roof, efficient insulation, cross-ventilation window design, roof overhangs, and active solar power compatibility.Â They can be built to almost any specifications and delivered on a trailer, too.

This is The Union by architect and developer Jonathan Segal Architect.Â The project gets its name from its prior life as the union hall for San Diegoâ€™s textile manufacturing business.Â When the textile union moved away, the building fell into disrepair, and rather than demolish it, Jonathan Segal decided to adaptively reuse the structure to create sustainable live/work units and his own architectural office.Â The Union now includes additional buildings that, in total, comprise 13 residential loft units, of which some are market-rate and some are affordable.Â Also, the rooftop solar panels provide ~50% of the unitsâ€™ energy needs.

I’ve seen houseboats — boats designed or modified to be used primarily as permanent dwellings — in Portland, Oregon and always wondered what it’d be like to live in one.Â I could certainly live in something like this, what with the green roof and modern aesthetic.Â It’s called the Schwimmhaus and was designed by confused-direction in Germany.Â Don’t be fooled by the images, though, because this is just a model.Â The real version should be finished in Spring 2009.Â At a size of 14 m long, 4 m tall, and 3 m wide, Schwimmhaus will feature a spacious living room, kitchen, bathroom, and loft bedroom.Â Â It’ll also be eco-friendly, too, with features such as the living roof and wood reclaimed from an old farm barn.
I quite honestly know absolutely nothing about this project – other than it’s a guest-house [I think], and the fact that I thought it looked pretty siiick.Â I’m really feeling the juxtaposition of the contemporary structure [it looks like corten steel, but I think it's iron clad?] with the existing, traditional main house. In addition to the contrast between the two structures in terms of form and material, there’s also this excavated space between the two – the function/intention of which, unfortunately, remains a mystery to me.

Every now and then, Michelle Kaufmann gives us a rendering or a glimpse of a development she’s working on in Colorado.Â Part of the development involves the design of new housing for the Sisters of St. Francis.Â The other part is a private, multifamily townhouse development adjacent to the Sisters’ housing.Â The townhouse community called Aria Denver promises to bring clean, green, and pure living to northwest Denver starting in 2009.
