The Great Dubai Pissing Contest
Many of you must know about the incredible development in Dubai in the past several years. These Images from the NASA Earth Observatory taken from 1973 to October of this year show the artificial landmasses off the coast as clear as macaroni glued on construction paper. The developer responsible for this, Nakheel, has an interactive map of future developments.
High rises have been sprouting all across the region like weeds in a sandbox.
Some of the newest concepts may well be a group of the most definitive examples of gigantism I have seen in the skyscraper world. The Dubai Towers-Dubai (creative name for creative architecture), by Sama Dubai, is one of the most recently unveiled designs.
Of course, the biggest news is that Dubai is soon to be home to several buildings that will not only be the tallest skyscrapers in the world, but will surpass the current record holder for tallest structure in the world, the KVLY-TV mast, without batting an eye. The Al Burj, also being developed by Nakheel, will be anywhere between 750 and 1000 meters high.

It’s competitor, The Burj Dubai, yet another SOM tower for the people, has already undergone construction and will be between 705 and 950 meters, the tallest structure in the world, at least until the Al Burj is built. These towers will beat out the KVLY-TV mast by half, if they reach their maximum projected heights.
More of these needles will most definitely continue to shoot out of the Middle Eastern sand in the future, as I have seen one such “top secret” design myself when I visited Pickard Chilton earlier this fall. Jon Pickard said, “I’d love to tell you how tall it is, but then I’d have to kill you.” Unfortunately, I did not bring my ninja-cam to take photos of the model.
Before you all get penis envy from looking at all these phalluses sparkling in the desert sun, take a look at the cost of building such gigantic wonders, and check out this slide show. Good thing “the richest 2% of adults in the world own more than half of all household wealth.”

We hit you with the iPad housing tower earlier, a solar powered rotating high rise a few weeks ago, and now here comes the Hydropolis Underwater Hotel [beats the Poseidon Resorts I posted on a few months ago hands down]. 27 Aug 07 at 4:22 pm
Eiseth all of nearly every country have been helping Africa for years and years to come you need to look at Africa from a diffrent angle like what about the rebels? what about the government look from many ways and then u come to a dead end, why Africa why not north Korea or hell Bangladesh common don’t just support Africa support many nations
loom
28 Aug 07 at 2:35 pm
Loom,I wouldn’t know about Africa or North Korea, but I dont think UAE needs to donate any money to Bangladesh. For your information,Bangladesh itself is building a 4.2 million sq feet Mall(Jamuna Future Park) in Dhaka which is nearly as big as the mall of Emirates. The current biggest mall in South Asia(Bashundhara City) is also located in Dhaka. The Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka has over 700 highrise buildings, that means 3.5 x Dubai Marina with 200 highrise towers! The number is expected to cross the 1000 mark by the year 2009.Not really a big surprise considering that recent EU statistics reveal-1 in every 3 shirt in EU is “made in Bangladesh”.Not to mention the billions of dollars the nation receives as remittance from its workers stationed at countries like KSA,UAE,KUWAIT,ETC.So poverty reduction rate is among the fastest in the world as well.In order to support some of the information I made available to you,I leave the following links:

Allthough these buildings are amazing and are excellent investments. arabs have so much money yet they cannot help the poorer nations, their brothers in pakistan, bangladesh (many other nations) are dying of hunger and they smile as they waste more money providing accomodation for the rich, allah subhana wat allah will question these people on the day of judgement and ask them what did you do with your money/wealth “err i spent it on a big building”
the cost of one of those buildings could pay for 500,000 (or more) shelters.
provide a large town with over a years supply of food. education for 300,000 children and could save countless lives

GIven the number of comments re: Africa above, I have to wonder how many of the persons who have left them are from Africa or have even been to Africa. It also escapes me how the creating of a sustainable, wealth generating city which will ensure the survival and prosperity of it’s citizens for many years to come has anything to do with the poverty in the Afican continent. Eiseth, one of ther primary reasons for death in the African continent is HIV, and unfortunately our (being an African “native” myself), pradicament will not be resolved simply by pouring billions into the continent. We need to take a leaf from Dubais book and learn to build a self sustainable continent that can live in harmony with itself.
I can only but commend Dubai on it’s initiative and hope that by beautiful but flawed home can learn from them…. Our continent is a treasure chest of minerals and we have every opportunity to realise the same dream.

Africa is rich in a great many things: oil, diamonds, hmmmmmmm anyone ever hear of the genocide in rwanda!!! rwanda is known to be rich in coltan, a natural resource found dvd players, cell phones, GAME CONSOLES. To Loom and Nathan (and people who think like that) I have a hunch that these people are being exploited.
As for the architecture: WOW! I am speechless, I would love to see these in my life time.

How come none of the comments are about the obvious link, which I think the auther was trying to make, about the abuse of WORKERS that is almost necessary to build these monstrosities?? And also, I don’t believe that you could be any stretch of the imagination call this sustainable nation building, Colin, unless you are building a nation based on slave labour, dangerous working environments and terrible living conditions.
The point is, this is not sustainable, building in the sea will destroy the environment, and people are being worked to death. How the hell can anyone think that is a sustainable business model??

Those clamining that dubai should spend their money on feeding the poor are just jealous, if a country has money, they should build their country first before thinking of helping other countries, especially those who’s changes of getting out of poverty is low. and if anyone should be help those less developed countries it should be countries like the states, canada and those in europe, as their ecomony is already strong and their countries are build already.
I am not from dubai, but is dame proud to be an arab living in canada and can brag about alteast a single arab country that is trying to compete with the west.

Well I think The people from uae just want 2 compete with other countries and they just want 2 prove themselves great by constructing such large structures.Well the truth always remains – ther is no point in doing this . It harms the environment and will surely leave it in a savage state.Ofcourse it feels nice 2 live or work in such posh buildings but in fact we are disrupting the balance of the environment and leaving many other creatures homeless.

Since I am live in dubai i would say on the contrary Dubai could very well do without these mammoth structures because this country is already home to millions and millions of skyscrapers.

It is a desert people, there is no environment to harm. But if your really concerned about the environment, then for god sake dont help people in Africa. If more people live then more environmental damage is done. If you really care about the environment, then perhaps you should suggest depopulating Africa through a sustained embargo. Unless of course its all about Arab envy, then the rants are kind of funny.

The rapid devolopment in dubai has fascinated me for several years. It seems somewhat risky to me to import sand to build artificial “islands,” but i’m not an engineer. These buildings are beautiful. As a chicago resident, I understand that it is useful and important for a city to project an image of wealth and stability in order to draw in tourists and convince the world to take notice. Also, although expensive, many of these buildings push the boundaries of design and allow innovative designers from around the globe to get a chance to try out new ideas.
Some people object to a show of wealth, claiming that somehow a country that is spending its own capitol within its own territory will somehow affect the global economy. Buildings cannot be exported, and do not affect the global economy other than tourism. I don’t feel that there is any sort of malice in creating beauty. Personally I don’t like much modern art, but architecture is lasting and useful, and creates a lot of jobs.

Well, to start with… for everyone that thinks Dubai and it’s representatives are just wasting money building all these sky scrappers… let me lay this on you– Dubai is one of the few places on earth as of today that is in no way, shape or form suffering from the depression we are going through at the moment. It is building jobs, and has one of the highest job records held in the world. Dubai is one of the richest places on earth, and it will just get richer if things keep going the way they are right now. They do what they need to do. Microsoft, Sony, Mitsubishi and any other big company you can think of either already have a building in Dubai or are planning on building one. Dubai is just doing what it needs to in order to accomplish it’s goal. Africa, and any other poor country, should just work more towards education, because that is one of the greatest ways that you can get out of poverty. I feel bad for saying that, but it would really help them. I am not saying no one else should help them, we all should… but education would be the best thing for them. Dubai should not have other peoples problems on their hands. They did not ask for it, they did not cause it, they shouldn’t be yelled it.

So naive some posters are. The Dubai buildinss are all designed by western architects and built by western construction companies, or at least western-managed. As for going to college in Dubai? What ajoke. Dubai is not an educational center. Tall buildings bought from westerners do not a great culture make. Dubai is just a collection of buildings and shops, night clubs and malls…nothing deeper than that. Furthermore, the bubble has burst.

Magniphisent presentation! The whole architecture goes beyond human ordinary’s mind.
The commentaries and replies are only a test how well prepare are our generation to accept the inevitable changes that human will face.
Education, health, and abundance create the Dubai’s effect.
I wish the best for my people and from all the other country in the world.
