Norman Foster : Beach Road, Singapore
Well, Lord Foster is a ninja in true form – always on his hustle. What’s new over at Foster+Partners, other than spaceports and the design of green cities in the desert you ask? How about a 150,000 square meter mixed-use development for Beach Road in Singapore – occupying an entire city block between the Marina Center and the Civic District. You know – in his firm’s free time.

Oh, and did I mention that it’s going to be green [it is Green Tuesday here at MNP]? The design apparently has the potential to reach the local ‘Platinum’ sustainable/green design rating – creating a block that should fit perfectly into Singapore’s ‘city in a garden’ concept.

At the base of the cluster of towers is a canopy structure that covers a number of interconnected public spaces, and the overall ground level circulation on the site. This canopy then climbs up the side of the towers, creating a vertical louver system – which both filter the sunlight AND serve as the structure to support vertical hanging plants that will climb the building creating ’sky gardens’. The slanted volumes of the towers are also oriented to direct prevailing winds so as to cool the lower floors, allowing for a certain amount of natural ventilation.
Reminds me of Bernard Tschumi’s Blue in NYC – I wonder if there’s gentrification in Singapore too? I’d guess probably…
