James Law Cybertecture’s ‘Pixel Tower’
I feel as if it’s been far too long since we had a real ‘my ninja, PLEASE‘ moment here on ArchitectureMNP – so when I saw that the ‘cybertects’ over at James Law Cybertecture, designers of the iPad Tower [I mean, they call it ‘cybertecture’, so they must be ‘cybertects’, right?] have designed another tower in Dubai – the Pixel Tower – I just couldn’t help myself.
What exactly makes this ‘cybertecture’, I wonder? The neon-looking lights?

It is a little disappointing that the peanut-shaped holes don’t change much as they go up the building

see reiser-umemoto’s o-14, openheim’s cor proposal which are at least structurally integrated…
they should vary the holes. maybe different ones on each side, then it would at least look like a grater. now that i look at it they actually do – so it is a grater.
this is of course in dubai where anything goes – the new vegas.
even though oma is pushing that weird death star, the overall idea of some “mundane” context is a breath of fresh air as far as dubai goes.
ninjas, gimmi a break…

I mean, honestly – I think the whole project is a little ridiculous looking [maybe even more than a little] – which was why I posted on it. I mean, I’m all for Dubai doing whatever it wants, and for architects going buck-wild over there with their designs – but there’s a lot of projects like this that I think are half-baked, looking like something a student would do.
Maybe it’s just the rendering technique? I’m not sure. I mean, I agree that the screen could be MUCH more interesting, but I don’t think that’s the only problem here.
This was meant as a ‘My ninja, PLEASE’ moment.

I can’t imagine what makes this cybertecture, in any sense of the non-word. The image cybertecture puts in my mind is design with very microcomplex form and geometry, finished with an overall streamlined cleanliness. This is just gaudy, rough around the edges (even though they are mostly curvilinear), and is less ‘cyber’ than a 1950’s silver Streamline trailer.
I do however, have much different things to say about the iPad Tower by James Law Cybertecture, but I figured I would continue the trend of leaving a negative comment on the Pixel Tower while leaving the response section of the iPad Tower’s post blank.
The overall rendering at the top of the post gives me this feeling of a Hotel/Casino who’s development got pushed to the outer edges of Las Vegas since its design couldn’t hang with the ‘cool kids’ on Las Vegas Blvd. (Note: there is little to no good design on Las Vegas Blvd. in my opinion!)

this building is just a mediocre skin.

It’s ‘cybertecture’ because there are curves, which are futuristic – along with a screen. C’mon, my ninjas…get with the program.
They also have free wi-fi!
