  2. I was actually ranting about this same subject to my boss the other day
Although mine also included Zaha Hadid

  3. Yeah, Zaha is another good one. The same design could be a house, a school, museum, sky jump…just increase or decrease the size and change the signage.

I love how pretentious this heads are too – like their on some high minded design.

  4. I live n Las Vegas and pretty much see this thing being built built at a pretty close scale and the speed of the entire projet’s construction is amazing to me. A few months ago it was just a cleared site, and now its really taking on form. When I first saw what looked like the Lebiskind structure, I actually though a part of the larger buildings broke and fell to the ground because all I could see was a jumbled up mess of steel formwork. Either way, its a fantastic project being built in the USA, instead of the Middle East or China.

Yes, criticize him all you want but you still wish you could work on projects of that caliber and popularity. BTW, do you or your bosses always make out your projects sound like what they actually are or do they embellish them to your clients and the public so that they attract more investors and get more positive media attention? Tell the truth….

The reality of the situation is that architecture has lost a great deal of its importance to the greater public. Let us at least allow ourselves be proud of our ability to create spaces and structures that still amaze the public, without them thinking too hard about it. Even if it is repeated over and over again.

I’m not trying to bring the other comments down, and I don’t work for MGM Mirage. I’m as frustrated with starchitects as much as the next intern. But I do realize that those architects are doing what they love, and if all you do is complain at others’ architectural habits, you are not making the profession any better.

  5. Maybe not, but you’re doing less damage than a hack who builds the same building in twelve different cities and claims to be an artist.

  6. And my ninja Brendan from Where swoops in to handle the riff-raff…good looks.

Seriously, if you read this page you know that I don’t hate that hard on designs – I try to keep it positive. But some of these starchitects actually flat out suck. BS and my personal aesthetic aside, producing a bunch of projects that look the same is NOT ‘doing what they love’ – it’s branding themselves and selling out in the worst possible way. The Disneyfication of the profession.

So Brendan, are you back? You took an even longer break than I did man…
