‘Skin of Corian’ Contest
Dupont recently held a competition called ‘Skin of Corian‘, calling for designs using their material for new and interesting furniture pieces [don't know what corian is? learn more from Dupont and wikipedia].
The Medusa lamp [above], designed by Claudia Carrasco [one of two winners of the competition], a member of the Barcelona-based design collective Exposed. Here’s Carrasco’s description of here design, from designboom.com:
Medusa Lamp Medusa conceived and made in Spain – is so-called because of its elegant marine namesake – meaning Jellyfish in Spanish. Made from laser-etched Corian®, which perfectly captures the sleek form of the Medusa, it’s swooping curves and celestial light conjure images of drifting effortlessly along with the sea’s currents. A flexible element of coloured light can be added, facilitating dynamic ambient luminescence and a complimentary mood change. Dimensions: 20 x 15 cm. Material: White Corian. Designs: 6 laser-etched designs. Colours: White (coloured bulbs alter lighting effect).
The Arsene clock from designer François Montay [honorable mention...I think he got screwed].
Arsene is a clock that can be both wall mounted or free standing. It has backlighted indicators to play with the the Corian’s translucency. Also it lets perceive the fine grain of the material throughout the enlightened zones [from Montay's site].
