Many of you have probably seen Gore Design Co.‘s work, either on the web somewhere or published in a magazine [for instance, Erosion Sink is featured in the February issue of DWELL, apparently]. Due to the level of exposure the work is getting I was initially hesitant to post on the designs…but my ninjas, please – the work that Brandon Gore [and those who work with/for him] has up on the company’s website is just too sick to pass over.
What you’re looking at here [images from Gore Design Co.'s website] is the aforementioned Erosion Sink [sexy, right?] – a concrete sink designed to look as though the basin has been eroded away from a flat slab due to the dripping of a faucet. Now not only is the sink an example of incredible craftsmanship and design – but its made from sustainable/green materials as well. Originally commissioned by an individual client, the sink keeps with Gore Design Co.’s standards of excellence in design – creating a product made from the [green] concrete of the future:
In regards to concrete being green: Concrete is, in itself, a green option for countertops. There is no perfect material, and of all the materials, I believe concrete is the least harmful for the following reasons: Concrete does not out-gas VOCâ€™s. The ingredients are most often quarried locally, so there is very little embodied energy in comparison to other materials, such as granite. All of the materials quarried are used, unlike other stones that have a tremendous amount of waste. The life cycle of concrete is extremely long.
At Gore Design Co., we take the eco-friendly aspect of concrete very seriously. We precisely measure all ingredients so there is little to no waste. We use a minimal amount of water, and the little water we do use to clean and polish is filtered. We use a product called GFRC. GFRC countertops use about 1/4 the amount of materials compared to traditional concrete, hence dramatically reducing the amount of portland [cement]. All of our pigments contain no heavy metals. We incorporate reclaimed materials such as glass and metal and incorporate the products into our pieces [from Gore's response to a post on Inhabitat in 2006].
GFRC is glass fiber reinforced concrete – a type of reinforced concrete that uses [go figure] glass fibers instead of the typical reinforcing – steel. This type of reinforcing has many benefits: the concrete can be more easily molded but still reinforced, as glass fibers can be used in concrete pieces that are thinner & more complex than traditional reinforcing meshes. The finished product is also lighter – as no metals were used in he reinforcing. Finally, this is a more green solution, since [as mentioned in the quote by Gore] the glass fibers have a lower embodied energy than steel.
