These ninjas over at SCI-Arc are not to be trifled with when it comes to their installations, as we’ve shown before. This time, however, they’ve stepped up their game and gotten Greg Lynn involved - designing a new installation that will open on May 30th entitled Blobwall Pavilion. The project is a collaboration between Greg Lynn FORM, Machinous [who manufactured the ‘bricks’] and Panelite [who supplied the material] - it aims to redefine the brick as a building unit, transforming it into a lightweight object made of colorful plastic and reinterpreted into modular elements’.

The Blobwall Pavilion is a contemporary wall system that recovers the voluptuous shapes, chiaroscuro and grotto-like textures of Baroque and Renaissance architecture in pixilated gradients of vivid color. On three walls of the installation, custom fabricated acrylic Bubble Cabinets will be installed to display small objects.

Though Blobwall Pavilion is designed in stock shapes totaling over 500 individual bricks in ten different colors, it can also be configured to custom shapes and color combinations. The varied yellow hues composing the body of the installation in the SCI-Arc Gallery celebrate the material qualities and colors of the roto-molded plastic and are arrayed as if bathed in a warm light so the highlights are not white, but instead crimson, plum and pink [via SCI-Arc].

Interesting stuff. I’m not sure what you do with these new ‘bricks’ other than build installations + pavilions at design schools - but it’s still cool to look at. I have to admit that I’m kind-of a ‘hater’, and that curvilinear computer-generated forms don’t necessarily excite me. This idea that the computer frees us from some lack of imagination or design/construction ability seems somewhat like BS - forms like these weren’t created because they’re expensive + difficult to manufacture, not necessarily only because we ‘couldn’t do it’. That, and just because we can do something now doesn’t mean that we should…

My general negativity towards ‘blob architecture’ aside, the installation itself looks pretty siiick, and fun - definitely something I’d suggest my left-coast ninjas check out.

In September 2008 the Blobwall Pavilion will leave SCI-Arc and travel to the Venice Biennale as part of the 11th International Architecture Exhibition - Out There: Architecture Beyond Building.

For more, check out SCI-Arc’s exhibitions page and the Blobwall Pavilion blog.

“L’art du deplacement”

Parkour [according to Wikipedia] is an activity with the aim of moving from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the abilities of the human body…it is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment. It’s also an incredibly interesting [and amazing] look at how we interact with our built environment. Parkour Generations is a a group promoting the sport [art?]:

Parkour Generations is dedicated to teaching and displaying the discipline of parkour, the art of movement. Bringing together many of the original expert practitioners of the art, along with the leading instructors in the UK, our aim is to keep the spirit of parkour alive and to provide the highest quality coaching for any and all who want to learn.

I wonder what a traceur would list as important/disireable qualities in urban + architectural design. Probably plenty of walls, railings, and plane/elevation changes?

Additionally, Throwing Yourself Against the Wall, is an interesting article on parkour over at the New York Times [subscription required, I think] - check it out.

Opening just a few weeks ago, the new home of the Cascais Music Conservatory is within a remodeled single-family residence from the early 20th century. Designed by the Portuguese architecture firm ARX, the conservatory’s classes will take place in new spaces built within the existing house - smaller rooms for teaching + practice, which also allowed the design to ‘respond to the decisive acoustic constraints’.

For performances, ARX have created an addition on the back-side of the building. The new space is an extension of the stone foundation of the original building, pushing outwards towards an open palm-tree field out back. The geometry of this new space - the roof of which serves as a balcony overlooking the garden - responds to the site, creating visual connections and ‘framing’ the surrounding environment - creating what ARX describes as an ‘intense relation’ with the garden.

Officially inaugurated in April 14th, 2008, the new building of the Cascais Music Conservatory, also headquarters of the Cascais and Oeiras Orchestra, has opened its doors to the public. The architecture project, designed by ARX Portugal (Nuno Mateus/José Mateus), won first place in the competition held in 2003 by the City Council of Cascais.

It dealt with a complex recovery of the building dated from last century, where the different “times” of its existence, as well as its ownership, are put in evidence, in a context strongly shaped by foreign, cultural and aesthetic, references.

First called ‘Chalet Madalena’, and later ‘Pensão Boaventura’, this building welcomed, especially between 1938 and 1946, guests from almost 30 nationalities, great part of it refugees from World War II. Today, that crossing of different countries continues, this time in an array of musicians, teachers and students from several nationalities, giving thus a new impulse to this magnificent School of music.

Who wouldn’t want a green roof? Nice to look at, fun to hang out on [in the case of roof gardens], they probably smell great [must be better than rubber+tar] - and oh yeah, they’re super for the environment. They reduce urban heat island effect, reduce water runoff/contamination, protect the existing roof from harmful UV rays, encourage [supposedly] the return of some indigenous species [birds, insects, etc.], and they clean the air. Super - if only there were a book released in late 2007 from PA Press that both gave a history of green roofing, an explanation of how they work, and provided an in-depth example of an existing roof that was converted to a green roof…

Enter Green Roof - A Case Study by Christian Werthmann - a book chronicling [in depth] the design and construction of a green roof for the American Society of Landscape Architects‘ headquarters in D.C. The ASLA hired Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, in collaboration with the Conservation Design Forum, to design the green roof ‘hybrid’ - meaning that it would be both a ‘green roof’ and a ‘roof garden’ [a distinction made clear in the case study]. The 3,300 square foot completed roof meets all the sustainable + aesthetic criteria mentioned above, and provides a rooftop hangout for the ASLA.

Tremendously informative, Werthmann’s book covers just about everything you could imagine and more. He starts with an essay on green roofs [Part I] - describing the types of green roofs [green roofs, roof gardens, hybrids], the conditions at the ASLA headquarters, the history of green roofs, precedents, construction/planting techniques, bioengineering, regionalism… and more. He also gives an in-depth description of the ASLA roof as it was proposed, including renderings, an explanation of the design, the intent, and the benefits of the roof. Part II is then additional information on the ASLA roof, followed by a number of photographs of the finished product.

The third part of the book - Part III: Roof Index A-Z - is really where the best information lies. Werthmann breaks down the project to it’s individual pieces, from air handlers to visibility, biodiversity to the 2 ‘waves’ designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. This section gives a description of each of the design issues that were faced on the project, along with an explanation of how they were solved - providing sketches, before and after photos, diagrams, plans + sections…everything. All questions are answered.

Basically, if you’re looking to learn more about green roofs [or roof gardens, or hybrids] this book is a great place to start. It gives an incredibly detailed look into the inception, design, and construction of a green hybrid roof system [in a temperate climate] - earning it a place on any seriously green ninja’s bookshelf.

Christian Werthman’s Green Roof - A Case Study can be purchased here from the MNP store or here from the publisher, Princeton Architectural Press.

Also, be sure to check out ASLA’s blog, The Dirt and their own info on their new green roof - including webcam videos and a virtual tour.

Preston, green ninja master over at Jetson Green, writes:

In Portland two brothers, Dustin and Garrett Moon, have been getting some serious attention for their project, The Commons — it could just be the first residence in the nation to meet the standards of the Living Building Challenge. The Living Building Challenge is about getting to something that’s truly sustainable, which is what I think the Moons are going after here. If you look at their plans, The Commons will use green tech that you might not see in other so-called green homes.

For instance, the home will have a green roof, composting toilet, earthenware floors, an indoor greenhouse for home-grown foods, two successive doors in the entry to act as an airlock, fly ash concrete walls made of ICFs, a rainwater catchment system with a storage cistern, design based loosely on the Passive House standard, a heat recovery ventilator, and photovoltaics and solar hot water tubes.

[Image: Overview rendering of 90 Wareham Street with the proposed green wall. Image courtesy of HYA for YAB Group]

In January of 2008 ten architecture firms in the Bean formed the Young Architects Boston Group - Ground, Höweler + Yoon Architecture, LinOldhamOffice, Merge Architects, MOS, over, under, SsD, Studio Luz, UNI, and Utile. A non-hierarchical group, YAB gives these firms the opportunity to come together to develop projects that they might not otherwise undertake - like their Parti Wall, Hanging Green installation.

The project - a prototype green wall installation for the 2008 AIA convention that will be in Boston in May - aims to transform a blank brick wall into ‘a lush green environment’, both bringing attention to underutilized sites in Boston and providing a green solution to improve public space in the city.

“The wall will be both a changing urban artwork and a public demonstration of the possibilities for greening a city like Boston,” stated Anthony Piermarini, a principal of Studio Luz. “Our urban center has hundreds of exposed brick party walls that face onto lifeless parking lots. We think of this project as a chance to transform those parking lots into hanging gardens.”

The installation will be suspended via a metal cable system from The 1850, a newly converted loft building at 90 Wareham Street in Boston’s South End. The supported planted panels will vary in dimension, and allow the team to tests different systems and plant types for permanent installations in the future.

For any of you who haven’t seen it, Rivers and Tides is a documentary about Goldsworthy and his work with nature, showcasing the personal and temporal nature of his art. Below I’ve embedded two clips from the film. For those of you have seen the film - watch it again! I just did [for at least the 4th time now], and it’s still incredible…

Our sister site GreenMNP - run by our ninja Jessie - has announced an MNP design competition to design a postcard for 350.org’s 350 Postcard Project.

350 is the new green is the new black is the new new. 350 is the number that scientists have determined will define the future of the Earth. 350 parts per million is the critical atmospheric CO2 concentration we need to achieve, and with haste. Currently, we are at 385 ppm. Bill McKibben and 350.org have started an international campaign to create awareness about 350 and to get people active in making it happen.

We at GreenMNP want to get active. And we want YOU to help! So, herein lies a challenge: design a dope 350 postcard for 350.org’s 350 Postcard Project and submit a photo/PDF of your postcard to green.suggest@myninjaplease.com. We will pick a winner 35.0 days from now, on Tuesday, May 27. Winner will receive their choice of these three books: a signed copy of The Bill McKibben Reader, Green Roof - A Case Study by Christian Werthmann, and Shopping Our Way to Safety by Andrew Szasz, not to mention supreme ninja credibility. First runner up will get their choice of the remaining two books and second runner up will get the third book. Furthermore, we at GreenMNP will distribute copies of all the 350 postcard entries we receive to 350 important politicians/organizations/thinkers/Earth lovers/Earth haters and anyone else you want. If you can think of someone in particular you would like us to send a postcard to, comment to this post with their name and postal and/or email address (if you don’t know their address, we’ll do our best to find them…ninjas are fairly resourceful).

The postcard should be an expression of YOU, why you love the planet and why you want to see our atmospheric CO2 concentration drop down to 350 ppm. A word from the 350ers themselves:

In words, collages, drawings, or any other form on the back of these postcards, we want to hear from people all around the world why it’s worth it for you, your community, and the rest of the world to aim for 350 parts per million.

Of course, you should submit your entries to 350.org as well. Or, if you prefer, we will submit your entry to them anyway.

Mail a scanned image or photo to postcards@350.org or attach a stamp and drop it in the mail to our San Francisco office at 1370 Mission St., San Francisco, CA 94103.

If you are from another land, fear not: 350 is the same in every language, and words are easily translated 简体中文 Deutsch Español Français Hrvatski Italiano 한국어 Português Svenska 日本語 العربية

So, get to work on your very own postcard design and send it over toe green.suggest@myninjaplease.com - and while you’re looking for ideas, check out MNP’s Earth Day coverage going down on all the sites [you can navigate all the different MNP sites by clicking the links in the upper right of each page].

Philip, writer over at Jetson Green, writes:

The Skinners Playground project by Phooey Architects of Melbourne, Australia is a project that makes compelling use of shipping containers. Many container architecture projects do little that breaks out of the strong rectilinear form of the component boxes. While only four shipping containers were used for Skinners Playground, they are cut and amended in such as way as to make much more of them than simply four box-shaped rooms. Even if the exteriors had been painted over, it would be immediately obvious that this was built from shipping containers. But, at the same time, this is a case of the whole being far more than merely a sum of its parts.

Tomorrow, my ninjas, is EARTH DAY. We here at MNP have a variety of features planned across all the sites [myninjaplease, MusicMNP, PolitricksMNP, RobotninjaMNP, and of course GreenMNP], but before all that begins I wanted to put you on to this call to wear blue on EARTH DAY - from the ninjas at architecture2030. Here’s what they’re thinking:

Want to stop global warming? Wear BLUE for Earth Day 2008! Join millions of people around the world who will be wearing BLUE to signify their vote for NO COAL. Events will be happening April 19th through April 22nd, so…

Earth Day If you’re attending the Earth Day event on the National Mall in Washington, DC on April 20th, wear BLUE.

If you’re attending another major Earth Day event, wear BLUE.

When you dress in the morning on Earth Day, wear BLUE.

No matter what you’re doing for Earth Day 2008, wear BLUE.

A BLUE shirt, top, sweater or jacket… whatever. Just wear BLUE.

Then, on April 22, make your voice heard. Pick up the phone: Call Congress at 202.224.3121 and ask for an immediate ‘Moratorium on Coal’ - a halt to the construction of any new conventional coal-fired power plants. Through this Call for Climate event, Earth Day hopes to generate over a million phone calls to Congress!

Your BLUE vote will count. Fifty-nine conventional coal plants were canceled in 2007. That’s over a third of the 151 planned. That happened before millions of people joined together to say No Coal.

BYOBLUE for Earth Day 2008. Be the vote that tips the balance.

Now, I know what a lot of you are thinking: EARTH DAY is some greenwashing nonsense where people pretend to care about the environment by recycling for a day, planting a tree out back, and spending an extra 30 seconds appreciating nature. Probably true. But, beyond that, Earth Day is a day where people are willing to listen - even if just for an extra few second - to the issues we’re facing and some solutions that are being proposed. Cynicism may be ‘hip’, my ninjas - but it doesn’t get shit done, now does it?

So wear BLUE, plant a tree, throw eggs at that soccer mom next door who drives a hummer [feel free to throw them at the hummer, too] - and think about how much you like this whole ‘life’ thing, and how dependent it is on a planet we abuse everyday.

[Image: Canale della Giudecca I, Venezia, 2007]

I just learned about the work of Sze Tsung Leong over at the New York Times - a 38 year old New Yorker, he studied architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and then Harvard. His photographs - of landscapes and cities all over the world - are composed with a unique play on the horizon that seemingly connects all of the pieces in his ‘Horizons’ series [view them side by side here]. Shooting with an overcast sky brings the viewer’s focus to the landscape and architecture/cityscape itself - which, along with ensuring that the horizons of each image line up, creating a visual connection between these locations from all over the world.

Viewed in a continuous line, the images suggest an unfurled view of the surface of the globe. This view, however, does not necessarily correlate with conventional perceptions of proximity and distance, as places in these images that are seemingly unrelated or unconnected may find themselves adjoined. According to Leong, “the distances separating near from far, familiar from foreign, inside from outside, iconic from quotidian, extraordinary from mundane, picturesque from unsettling, are never constant.” The relationships and gradations between these opposites that are suggested by the photographs—and the fact that the images can be rearranged to form different landscapes and visual sequences—are meant to reflect the complex and perpetually transforming relationships between regions, cultures, and nations that give form to the contemporary world and that shape the experiences of each individual viewer [via].

Sze Tsung Leong’s Horizons will be exhibited at Yossi Milo Gallery in NYC through May 17th.
I’m pretty sure this is from the Architectures video series [which is pretty dope - check it out]. Sure, it’s a little bit introductory level for some of you ninjas - but it never hurts to brush up on the basics.

Enjoy.

For this week’s edition of Eye Candy I couldn’t help but find some images related to our review of Yona Friedman’s Pro Domo - so here we have some collages and drawings done by Friedman of his ‘Ville Spatiale’ polemic.

In 1960 Friedman published his two seminal manifestos, Architecture Mobile and La Ville spatiale. He defines the function of the space frame as follows: Critical for the Ville Spatial is what I call ‘spatial infrastructure’: a multi-storey space-frame-grid, which is supported by widely-spaced piles […]. This infrastructure forms the fixed element of the city. The mobile element consists of walls, base-surfaces and dividing walls which make the individual division of the space possible; it could be called the ‘filling’ for the infrastructure. All elements which come into direct contact with the users (i.e. those they see, touch etc.) are mobile, in contrast to the infrastructure, which is used collectively and remains fixed [via].

Yona Friedman, probably best known for his ‘Ville Spatiale’, has been developing his theories on ‘mobile architecture’ for 50 years - and has now compiled a personal sampling of these works into one hardcover monograph: Pro Domo.

As Friedman states on the very cover of the publication, Pro Domo isn’t so much a ‘book’ as it is a collection of ‘fragments on scattered topics produced in different periods of [his] life’. The resulting monograph gives the reader a look into the mind of Friedman - providing samplings of his work spanning the past 50 years. Filled with insightful anecdotes, design proposals, photos, collages, plans, sketches, and descriptive storyboards, Pro Domo is both visually rich a great read.

One thing that becomes apparent while looking through the book is that Friedman is a man ahead of his time. His theories on mobile architecture - ‘mobile’ referring not to architecture that moves, but rather architecture that allows for the future social movements of it’s inhabitants [an inspiration for this, perhaps] - called for a new and contemporary way of designing our cities that was attempting to respond to 20th century demands. His theories and proposals span all levels of design, calling for large scale movements such as a globally interconnected rapid mass transit system, city-sized space frames that would provide the structure for a new type of user-generated architecture [through the use of the ‘flatwriter‘, a machine much like a typewriter that Friedman envisioned helping people design their homes, etc], a proposal for community-driven urban agriculture, and more.

I think that one of my favorite parts of the collection was Friedman’s thoughts on urban agriculture. In a section titled Towards a Policy of Urban Survival Friedman shares with us a contribution he made to a UNESCO conference on Man and the Biosphere - where he argues that cities have for too long been dependent on their surrounding communities, and must develop into self-sustaining entities rather than leaching off of their neighbors.

To achieve a working urban agricultural system, Friedman proposes that the city be divided into the various zones required - allocating a large portion of the city to producing its own food, power, etc. He uses his ‘Ville Spatiale’ model as an example of how the city can be layered so as to maximize space without the need for building too high [and therefore putting what some consider too many people in one condensed location] - claiming that a city would not need to rise above 3-5 stories if his vision took shape. These space frame structures would then be populated by the city’s inhabitants and their dwellings, while leaving a certain percentage of the floorplates open for public parks + gardens, and some open to the sky for light + ventilation. Friedman even goes so far as to break down the man hours required for creating a truly sustainable urban agriculture - assigning some kind of agricultural or food production work to each citizen based on a 50 hour work week as follows: 10 hours for food production, 12 hours for crafts + services for self-help or barter, and 28 hours for intellectual, social + cultural activities. This may seem ridiculous/unmanageable, but imagine how much money you’d save by producing your own food/helping to produce food for the entire community - and imagine if 28 hours of your work week were set aside for ‘intellectual, social + cultural activities’. Pretty siiick.

While many of Friedman’s ideas are utopian - and therefore possibly unachievable - just as many are visionary in their socialist/community oriented propositions, and could be attained if we were prepared to drastically alter the way we design, build, and live within our cities. Yona Friedman is a designer who understood 50 years ago the problems of today, and Pro Domo gives a glimpse at his innovative and thought provoking solutions.

Overall, this collection of of Yona Friedman’s self-described ‘preoccupations’ is a highly enjoyable and thought provoking monograph - with what may be a near perfect balance of theory/text and descriptive images/photos/collages [you’ve got to love architectural theory that comes with great visuals, my ninjas]. Definitely recommended + ninja approved.

An inspiring documentary on the Cradle to Cradle design concept of the chemist Michael Braungart and the architect William McDonough. Winner of the Silver Dragon at the Beijing International Science Film Festival 2006.

Here’s an interesting + informative documentary on McDonough + Braungart’s Cradle to Cradle concept in action - in essence showing us that waste is unnecessary, and that with smart design we can basically eliminate it. Of particular interest is that they’ve been pretty successful in convincing corporations of their cradle to cradle theory, because these businesses want to get the most for the money. Funny that being environmentally friendly is, in the end, economically friendly as well - we seem to have fought nature for so long to get ahead, and we’re now finally at a point where working with it is the next step in our development. Should be great.

I’m going to come right out and say that this thing is a) basically the same as maaaaaaaddddd other Daniel Libeskind designs [I’m pretty tired of these starchitects, frankly] and b) carbon copy or not, it’s kind of a mess.

But, being a fan of the design or not isn’t even the point - as Libeskind has taken a commission in China, a nation that he suggested architects boycott earlier this year [so, a month or so ago]. Libeskind was speaking out against the human rights violations attributed to China, and called for architects to ‘take a more ethical stance’ - saying that HE ‘won’t work for totalitarian regimes’. So what’s changed, you ask? Well the project is in Hong Kong, which apparently is no longer part of China. My ninjas, PLEASE.
In response to the news, his wife [and the firm’s manager] gave the following statement:

“This is not a dogmatic idea for Daniel,” she said. “It’s a personal thing for him. We’ve seen what has happened in Tibet, but there is a rule of law in Hong Kong that Daniel is comfortable with” [this quote, and the previous quote via Times Online].

Sorry Daniel, but you can’t separate one from the other just because you want the $do-re-me$ - which is what this is all about. Regardless of Hong Kong’s appearance, it is only that way because it is a tool of the Chinese government. While MNP isn’t taking a stance on whether or not architects should accept projects there, I will say this: anyone who thinks doing business with Hong Kong is alright but the rest of China is morally unacceptable is PLAYING HIMSELF.

By the way - hasn’t Libeskind done work in Israel? He can’t see a parralel between that and the China-Tibet situation?
