I’ve been a huge fan of this project since I found it while doing research for my thesis last year – I only wish that I had thought of posting it on MNP myself. Instead, I saw that our ninja Calvin had posted on the Inversion House over at mirage.studio.7, and couldn’t help throwing it up on architecture.mnp too.

Designed/constructed by Dan Havel and Dean Ruck, the project used materials from the bungalow [located in Houston] to create a tunnel through the house from an alley out back. The artists started from the small end, and after logging in over 400 hours creating the black hole like installation completed the transition from 2 to 12 feet on the street/public side of the house.

For several years, I have utilized the language of architecture and its use within the context of drawings, sculpture, and installation art. The physical act of process is the greatest reward. Leaving raw evidence of the act is a critical part of the final piece. I strive to say a lot with a little [from spacetaker.org].

Drive past at almost any time of the day or night, and you’ll see people climbing inside the piece. It has become that rare thing: a public artwork people are excited about. Visitors stand in the center of the vortex, balancing on one leg, jumping and mugging for the camera. A bunch of bikers drove their motorcycles in for a picture; kids on their way to the prom and even brides have had their photos taken in it.

“The wide variety of people that respond to it is the intriguing part for me,” says Havel, “from the sophisticated art looker to the industry worker going home at night.” Havel points out that while we’re used to seeing the fantastic realistically presented in films like Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings, we’re amazed to see it in daily life [via].

  5. Why architecture ruins architects:

I think this project is tight, but all I can think about is water infiltration and the mold growing behind the wall…
