So yes – this is a documentary by Les Stroud, AKA Survivorman. That aside, it’s an interesting look at a family trying to go “off the grid” and live a life more in-tune with nature and the environment.

Personally, my favorite part was the ‘well witcher‘ – and how ridiculous it was / how it turned out.

  1. I would like to point out how NOT environmentally friendly/intelligent a lot of this was – like starting the project in October in Canada, air-lifting that lumber in, etc.

I mean, it’s interesting nonetheless, but still.

  2. Just how did that script look for the editor?

[criving car, looking determined at the horizon]
voice over: “what do we have to sacrifice to live in a more natural state ?”

    dude,
    the car. think about it.

But seriously, getting off the grid sounded more like an alibi for the desire for independence and self-sufficiency, than actually being in tune with nature.
I never could finish reading walden for exactly this reason.

*Louis* Theroux (of tv nation fame) in his turn interviewed weird folks living alone in woods in self built compounds, fostering obnoxious racists or ridiculous religuous beliefs (or both). In the interviews they so openly paranoid of society it was *almost* more disturbing to me than their kkk soirees.

The famliy in this movie is not disturbed, they’re interesting, bold, refreshing, but ultimately , naive.

  3. haha – well, that’s what I was [briefly] getting at in my previous comment. That’s why I tried to make a point in the post that they wanted to live in nature and all that – not live sustainably.

That being said, you’re absolutely right. I mean, in terms of the energy requirement / environmental impact of the project [dude built a compound, you have to think of that too], I’d be willing to suggest this was ‘worse’ for the environment than a building in the suburbs. All those trucks, that helicopter, a number of other things – there was a lot going on.

  4. It’s a really nice idea… It’s sort of counterproductive though. Move out to the middle of nowhere so you can drive back to the city… Why not just bring nature into your current home?
