Happy New Year!! Our resolution, you ask? Well, to hell with all that ‘lose weight, eat healthy, be a better person, blah blah blah….’ crap [you’re not going to do it anyways, admit it]. Instead, we’re on a mission from god to step it up and bring you EVERYTHING you’ve ever wanted from the internet all in one family of web pages…but before we get into that, let’s check out a new years construction tradition: the crystal ball that drops in Times Square.

crystal-ball-2.JPG

So I’m going out on a limb here and assume that everyone is acquainted with the idea behind the ball. They light it up on New Year’s Eve, and one minute before midnight the countdown starts, the ball begins its 77 foot descent down a poll on top of One Times Square, flashing all sorts of bright colors, etc. Pretty dope.

The concept is based on a time ball, an instrument used [mostly] to help sailors set their chronometers, as accurate time keeping was essential for sailors so they could determine their longitude while at sea. The balls were typically dropped at 1 PM, and the time re-set was done upon the drop, not when it reached the bottom [just an American New Year’s thing, I guess]. There are something like 60 [or more] balls still in use today, which drop every day at 1…

Here’s some general info on the New Year’s ball, which debuted in 1907:

-2000 – 2006 – The Ball gets an overhaul for the new millennium celebrations with a design from Waterford Crystal [thats Irish crystal, my ninjas] and new technology. It weighs 1070 pounds (485 kg), measures six feet (1.8 m) in diameter and installed with 504 crystal triangles, illuminated externally with 168 halogen light bulbs and internally with 432 light bulbs of clear, red, blue, green and yellow colors. Each year there is a theme in the Waterford crystal concept with a particular chunk of designed crystals being called something, and in previous years there have been for example “Hope for Fellowship,” “Hope for Wisdom,” “Hope for Unity,” “Hope for Courage,” “Hope for Healing,” “Hope for Abundance” etc. There are strobe lights and mirrors to create bursts of excitement and special effects for the audience.

-2007 – The ball will remain as a Waterford Crystal ball as in 2000-2006 (described above), but will be lit by LED lights provided by Philips instead of halogen bulbs for the 2007 edition and the foreseeable future. [more info from wikipedia]

Not mentioned is that the ball is apparently based on the Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome design, as seen below in the biosphere from the ’67 World Expo in Montreal [for all the know-it-alls and haters out there – we know he didn’t ‘invent’ the geodesic dome, but he blew that $%&* up, so give the man his credit].
