I was pretty interested to see this video – submitted by AMNP reader ‘mightygoose’ – of a proposal by Atkins to increase the prayer hall space of Al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, or the Grand Mosque, which surrounds the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. First off, regardless of your religion, I think we can all agree that designing this project would be a big deal for whoever is chosen – and could be either a great or terrible thing for the chosen designer [imagine redesigning an iconic religious structure, and your design being poorly received after execution]. Also, the suggestion that they could replace the existing mosque with this new design was pretty bold – I’m very interested to see if a plan goes ahead that will replace any of the existing structure.

  1. Very intresting,

I already see some issues though. people circulate around the Kaaba on the second floor as well. By removing that part pf the building they cut a vital function of the Masjid without offering a solution.
Their solution is only for regular prayers and not for the main activity of the Masjid Al-Haraam were you find people specially in the Hajj season circulating in huge numbers so they seek further but less crowded areas mainly the roof of the building.
