Callebaut Architectures: French Anti-Smog

Some of you may remember a series of posts [listed below] we featured here on Vincent Callebaut Architectures back in March of 2007, where we covered a number of the young designer’s projects – showcasing his incredible renderings and unique/individual architectural aesthetic. We here at MNP recently received an email from Vincent Callebaut informing us that his site has been updated – and linking to the most recent project: ANTI-SMOG [An Innovation Centre in Sustainable Development in Paris].

Callebaut describes Anti-Smog as a ‘parasite‘, attaching itself to the ‘post-industrial urban structure of the Petite Ceinture and the canal de l’Ourcq in the 19th Parisian district’. In response to the pollution [smog] in Paris, and the industrial area’s contribution to this problem, Anti-Smog is a ‘green’ project – promoting sustainable design + development through its use of green technologies and building techniques.

In this case the ‘green’ technologies are not simply an attempt to sustain this one building alone, but instead to actually ‘de-pollute’ the Parisian environment. Quite the task to accomplish – but how?

The ‘Solar Drop’ [images below] [attached to the bridge, resembling a ship] starts off with 250 square meters of photovoltaic panels. Next, the white, ship-like ‘body’ of the building is coated in titanium dioxide [TiO2] in it’s anatase form – which is self cleaning, and can aid in the reduction of local air pollution through it’s reaction with ultraviolet radiation [I think the argument here is that when organic particulates in the air come into contact with the building the TiO2 acts as a catalyst, causing them to break down – thus diminishing the amount of these particulates in the air].

Inside the ‘Drop’ are public meeting and function rooms and a large exhibition space – all organized around a central courtyard/garden – a ‘phyto-purified aquatic lagoon’.

The second part of Anti-Smog is the Wind Tower [below] – a spiraling public art gallery, capped by a ‘garden in the sky’. The building skin is a layering of a number of materials and technologies, including ‘green’ plant elements and Darrieus machines [wind turbines] to take advantage of the local prevailing winds to create renewable energy.

Sustainability…what an overused word…my question is when a building starts being sustainable? when it’s already constructed? or long before on the concept design stage when you make desicions on materials, structures,etc? what i see here is a building that will consume massive amounts of energy to be constructed, and not only talking about the titanium dioxide chemical process, also to build those futuristic structures will consume a lot of energy, also if you have glass everywhere the energy efficiency is very low, therefore, you’ll need to spend more energy in air conditioning or heating. I can keep going on with the amount of energy necessary to elaborate curved glass (if it uses double glass then is worst) and other materials, the expensive maintainance of the photovoltaic panels…here i see more about form, than sustainability…anyway this building will get it’s sustainable certificate.
    PS: i would like to know the amount of CO2 that this building would break down compare to a tree(i read that a single tree can absorb almost 30 tons of CO2 a year)…sustainability in every construction should start on itself…well that’s my opinion.
