I came across this project while checking out the Moshe Safdie and Associates website, looking for information on The Boston Museum Project [a Boston history museum that Safdie is designing for a plot on the Rose Kennedy Greenway – land reclaimed during the Big Dig].

The Marina Bay Sands, in Singapore, is an exhibition / meeting / auditorium / leisure / shopping / hotel complex [really, its probably even more than all that] commissioned by the Las Vegas Sands for a [giant] plot on the ever-evolving Marina Bay.

The current and future development of Marina Bay [‘Garden City by the Bay’], located on the southern tip of Singapore, is part of a larger urban plan to encourage Singapore’s growth into a major financial and cultural center of Asia.

Marina Bay will be a place for people from all walks of life to explore, exchange and entertain. There will be apartments set amidst lush greenery near Singapore’s waterfront. The local community and visitors alike can enjoy the parks, waterfront promenade and attend the events and celebrations held at the Bay. State-of-the-art office space and transport infrastructure will provide seamless connectivity for companies and professionals to grow and exchange business ideas. It will be place with a loop of attractions and round-the-clock energy that continues during and outside office hours [from Marina Bay site].

The Marina Bay Sands itself will consist of waterfront promenades and public leisure/performance space, a casino [obviously], two 2,000 seat theaters, a state-of-the-art one million square foot convention center, a museum of Arts & Sciences, and luxury retail.

However, the most interesting [and impressive] aspect of the project is the hotel complex – three separate 50 storey hotel towers, capped by a ‘Sky Garden’ that connects their roofs. This ‘Sky Garden’ will provide 360 degree views of the entire bay and the city; AND pools [yes, plural-with an ‘s’], spas, and tree-lined running paths – all on the roof that spans three buildings. My ninja, please.

It [Marina Bay Sands] is a place that is vibrant and dynamic, a place that transforms from hour to hour, from day to night, and is evocative of the great urban places. It is here that the imaginings of a global city become a reality [from Moshe Safdie and Associates].

  1. […] Well, Lord Foster is a ninja in true form – always on his hustle. What’s new over at Foster+Partners, other than spaceports and the design of green cities in the desert you ask? How about a 150,000 square meter mixed-use development for Beach Road in Singapore – occupying an entire city block between the Marina Center and the Civic District. You know – in his firm’s free time. […]

  2. Just watched a one hour documentary on the Skypark @ Marina Bay Sands on USA television The Science Channel’s “Build it Bigger.”

This Skypark is fantastic engineering project!!

  3. What a FABUILOUS hotel. The inside and outside are so exciting! Stayed there for two weeks with friends and you don’t really need to leave the hotel. So beautiful! We stayed on the top floor, which cost a pretty penny, but was surely worth it!
