For our second installment of Mecanoo as our architecte de la semaine we bring you the competition winning courthouse design by the firm, for Trento Italy. Here’s some background info on the project, from Mecanoo:

The present courthouse with prison was built in 1876 and lies on the border of the old and the new city center of Trento. The introverted building no longer meets modern requirements and so the province organized an international competition for an innovative, modern courthouse. The old monumental building has to be renovated and become part of the new complex. It is important that public space be enhanced and that the building should play a major role in urban life.

In order to open up the urban space surrounding the existing historic courthouse, and create a new public plaza, Mecanoo called for the demolition of the existing prison – to be replaced by a new courthouse that frames the new urban space. A cantilevered canopy pushes out 23 meters over the plaza, creating a shaded gathering space for city residents – the underside of which is painted with fragments of frescos depicting the 4 seasons [based on frescos from a local medieval castle].

The new courthouse building contains 3 distinct sections. The first is a ‘public zone’. Nearest to the public plaza, it contains restaurants and cafes with outdoor terraces, a library and a post office. The ‘semi private zone’ contains the courtrooms, as trial is a public matter but needs a certain level of privacy, and then finally the ‘private zone’ contains the offices of the court officers, etc.

As seen in the two sections above, the courthouse is a ‘carved’ volume – a mass from which patio-loggias are carved, in order to bring natural light into the court’s various spaces. On the first floor these patios are carved into the building in such a way so as to not only allow for natural lighting, but also to further increase the courthouse’s connection to the surrounding urban fabric, and the public plaza. There are then more patios carved into the third floor, allowing for natural lighting and exterior views for the courtrooms and other spaces embed in the center of the building.
